ABOUT THE 2019 BMW 650I GRAN COUPE
The 2019 BMW 650i Gran Coupe is the V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive version of the F06 6 Series Gran Coupe, BMW’s four-door coupe-styled saloon. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft, and it uses an eight-speed automatic.
Last of the V8 Gran Coupes
2019 was the final model year for the F06, which had been on sale in the US since 2013 and was facelifted for 2016. The 650i was the top regular model, sitting below only the M6 Gran Coupe, and offered in both rear-drive and xDrive all-wheel-drive forms. Its successor, the 8 Series Gran Coupe, arrived for the 2020 model year.
Character
The twin-turbo V8 gives the 650i effortless acceleration and a deep, muscular soundtrack, with the long-legged eight-speed gearbox keeping it relaxed at motorway speeds. Rear-wheel drive gives it a more traditional feel than the xDrive car, though traction in poor weather is not as strong. The long body provides four genuinely usable seats and a good-sized boot.
Buying one today
The N63-family V8 is the main concern. Commonly reported problems include high oil consumption, worn valve-stem seals, timing chain wear, leaking coolant and oil lines and heat damage around the turbochargers, which sit inside the V of the engine. BMW issued service measures for many of these engines, so a car with a thorough service history and evidence of that work is much the safer purchase.
Rivals
The 650i Gran Coupe competed with the Audi S7, Mercedes-AMG CLS 53, Porsche Panamera 4S and Maserati Quattroporte.
