ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 650I GRAN COUPE
The 2016 BMW 650i Gran Coupe is the four-door version of the third-generation 6 Series (F06), a low-roofed luxury saloon styled as a coupe. It uses the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, rated at 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version with the eight-speed automatic transmission; an all-wheel-drive 650i xDrive Gran Coupe was also available.
A coupe with four doors
The Gran Coupe joined the 6 Series family for the 2013 model year, adding a longer 2,968 mm wheelbase and two rear doors to the coupe’s sleek profile. For 2016 the whole 6 Series range received a mid-life update with a revised front end, updated lighting, new paint colours and interior refinements. The Gran Coupe would outlast the two-door models and was eventually replaced by the 8 Series Gran Coupe.
Practicality
Compared with the two-door 6 Series, the Gran Coupe’s extra length makes the rear seats far more usable, although the sloping roofline limits headroom for tall passengers. Access to the boot is through a conventional boot lid rather than a hatch.
Buying one today
The N63 V8 is the main concern. Commonly reported issues include oil consumption, valve stem seal wear, timing chain problems, injector failures and leaks from the cooling and oil systems around the turbochargers, which sit between the cylinder banks. BMW issued service campaigns for many of these, so look for evidence of the work. The car’s electronics and adaptive suspension components can also be costly to repair.
