ABOUT THE 2019 BMW 530E
The 2019 BMW 530e iPerformance is the plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 5 Series (G30) saloon. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine works with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined output of 248 hp and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft). This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive car; a 530e xDrive with all-wheel drive was also sold.
Where it sits
The 530e arrived for the 2018 model year, so 2019 was its second season. It used a lithium-ion battery of roughly 9.2 kWh gross, mounted under the rear seat, and the EPA rated its electric range at 16 miles (26 km). A larger battery and an “XtraBoost” function came later in the G30’s life, so 2019 cars have the original, shorter-range setup.
Living with it
Driven gently on short trips, the 530e can run on electricity alone. On longer runs it behaves like a smooth, quiet four-cylinder 5 Series. The battery position raises the boot floor, so luggage space is noticeably smaller than in the 530i. Charging is AC only, through an on-board charger, and a full charge on a Level 2 wallbox takes a few hours.
Buying one today
Check that the charging port, cable and on-board charger work. Ask whether any battery or high-voltage software campaigns have been done, as BMW issued recalls affecting plug-in hybrids of this period. The petrol engine and chassis share the general G30 weak points, such as worn suspension bushes and occasional oil leaks.
Rivals
Its main plug-in rival was the Volvo S90 T8. Many buyers also compared it with conventional versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6.
