ABOUT THE 2021 BMW 530E
The 2021 BMW 530e is the plug-in hybrid model in the facelifted G30 5 Series saloon range. It combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic gearbox, giving a combined output of 288 hp with BMW’s XtraBoost function and 310 lb-ft. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version; a 530e xDrive with all-wheel drive was also offered.
Where 2021 sits
The 2021 model year brought the mid-life facelift of the G30 5 Series, with a larger kidney grille, redesigned headlights and tail lights and updated driver-assistance features, and the 530e shared these changes. In this form its EPA-rated electric range is about 21 miles (34 km). XtraBoost briefly adds extra electric power when accelerating hard, lifting output to the full 288 hp figure.
How it works
The 530e can run on electric power alone at moderate speeds and over short distances, which suits commuting if it can be charged regularly at home or work. Once the battery is depleted, it operates as a conventional hybrid. The battery sits beneath the rear seat, but the boot is still smaller than in petrol versions, and the floor is slightly raised.
Buying one today
Ask for evidence of how the car has been charged and used, and check that the charging cable is included. The hybrid system is generally reliable, but as with any plug-in hybrid, battery capacity can reduce over time; a dealer can check its health. The 2.0-litre engine is the familiar B46/B48 family unit used widely across BMW’s range.
Rivals
Plug-in hybrid rivals included the Volvo S90 Recharge T8, while buyers might also consider the conventional BMW 530i or 540i.
