ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 330I XDRIVE
The 2018 BMW 330i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder version of the sixth-generation 3 Series saloon (F30), in its facelifted form. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produces 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and this entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic, which drives all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system.
The end of the F30 era
The 330i name returned for the 2017 model year, when BMW replaced the 328i with this more powerful engine. The 2018 model year turned out to be the last full year of the F30 saloon in the US, as the all-new G20 3 Series arrived for 2019. By this point the F30 was a mature, well-sorted car, with the facelift’s LED headlights and updated interior already in place.
Why choose xDrive
The xDrive system normally favours the rear axle but can shift torque forward when grip runs short, making the 330i xDrive a popular choice in regions with snowy winters. The trade-off is a little extra weight and slightly lower fuel economy than the rear-drive 330i. See our guide to drivetrain types for how the layouts differ.
Buying one today
Known weak points on high-mileage cars include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, cooling-system components and worn suspension bushes. The xDrive transfer case should be checked for noises or hesitation, and mismatched tyres can strain it.
Rivals
Alternatives in 2018 included the Audi A4 quattro, Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC, Alfa Romeo Giulia Q4, Volvo S60 and Lexus IS 300 AWD.
