ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 330I XDRIVE
The 2017 BMW 330i xDrive is a four-door saloon from the sixth-generation 3 Series (F30), in its facelifted (LCI) form. For 2017 the 330i name replaced the long-running 328i, and with it came a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder (B46) producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm). Power goes to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic.
What changed for 2017
The new engine belongs to BMW’s modular engine family and replaced the N20 used in the 328i, bringing slightly more power and a reputation for smoother running. The F30 had already received its mid-cycle facelift, with revised LED lighting, a refreshed interior and updated suspension tuning. Above the 330i sat the six-cylinder 340i.
Practicality
The F30 offers proper room for four adults, a 480-litre boot and a split-folding rear seat. All-wheel drive makes it an easy choice in snowy climates, at a small cost in fuel economy and weight compared with the rear-drive 330i. The wheelbase is 2,810 mm.
Buying one today
The B46/B48 family has a better reputation than the N20 it replaced, particularly with no widespread timing-chain problem. Commonly reported items on cars of this age include oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket, coolant leaks and electric water-pump failure, plus the usual run-flat tyre and suspension-bush wear.
Rivals
Competitors in 2017 included the Audi A4 quattro, the Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC, the Cadillac ATS, the Infiniti Q50 and the new Alfa Romeo Giulia.
