ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 430I XDRIVE COUPE
The 2017 BMW 430i xDrive Coupe is the all-wheel-drive, four-cylinder version of the 4 Series two-door (F32). It uses the new B46 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm). This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
New for 2017
The 2017 model year brought new names and engines to the 4 Series: the 430i replaced the 428i, and the 440i replaced the 435i. For the 430i that meant swapping the N20 for the B46, with 8 hp more. 2017 was the only model year of the 430i before the 4 Series’ mid-life facelift, which arrived for 2018 with LED lighting and revised suspension.
What it is like
The 4 Series Coupe is lower and wider than the 3 Series saloon it is based on, sharing the same 2,810 mm wheelbase. The four-cylinder offers good performance and economy, and xDrive provides all-weather traction while keeping a rear-biased feel. The rear seats hold two adults, and the boot is reasonably sized for a coupe.
Buying one today
The B46 is regarded as more reliable than the N20 it replaced, but oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks are commonly reported as these cars age. The xDrive transfer case should run smoothly without noise or judder on tight turns.
Rivals
Competitors included the Audi A5 Coupe quattro, the Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC Coupe, the Lexus RC 300 AWD and the Infiniti Q60 AWD.
