Second and last year of xDrive
BMW introduced xDrive for the M235i in 2015, and 2016 was the model’s final season before the B58-engined M240i took over for 2017. The all-wheel-drive option broadened its appeal in snowy US states, where a light, rear-drive coupe with wide tyres can struggle in winter.
Driving and practicality
xDrive gives the M235i a clear traction advantage when accelerating, particularly in the wet, while its rear-biased set-up keeps the handling balanced. The trade-off is a little extra weight and no manual gearbox. Like other 2 Series coupes, it has four seats, with the rear best suited to shorter passengers, and the rear seat backs fold to extend the boot.
Buying one today
Look for a full service history and ask about modifications, which are common on this engine. Commonly reported N55 faults are leaking valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets and a failure-prone electric water pump and thermostat. On xDrive cars, listen for noise or shudder from the transfer case, especially in tight turns, and make sure all four tyres are the same brand and wear level.
