ABOUT THE 2020 BMW M235I XDRIVE
The 2020 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is the M Performance version of the F44 2 Series Gran Coupe, a compact four-door sedan built in Leipzig, Germany. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 301 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
A new kind of 2 Series
The F44 was new for the 2020 model year and is unrelated to the rear-drive 2 Series Coupe. It uses the transverse-engine platform shared with the X1, X2 and MINI models, so the engine sits sideways and the all-wheel-drive system is front-biased. The M235i launched as the top model, alongside the 228i xDrive.
Performance hardware
To make the most of its front-biased layout, the M235i has a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential on the front axle and BMW’s ARB wheel-slip control, which works closer to the wheels than traditional traction control. M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes and frameless door windows complete the package.
Practicality and ownership
Four doors and a usable boot make it more practical than the two-door M240i, although rear headroom is limited by the sloping roof. As a newer design, it has fewer widely reported problems; check for up-to-date software, worn performance tyres and any outstanding recalls.
