ABOUT THE 2015 BMW M235I XDRIVE
The 2015 BMW M235i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the M Performance flagship of the first-generation 2 Series coupe (F22). It uses the 3.0-litre turbocharged N55 inline-six rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), and sends drive to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system and an eight-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered with xDrive.
New for 2015
The 2 Series coupe went on sale in the US for 2014 as a rear-drive car only. For 2015 BMW added xDrive versions, giving the M235i a winter-friendly option and stronger traction when launching from rest. The rear-drive car kept the choice of a six-speed manual.
What it is like
The M235i sits between the regular 2 Series and full M models. It combines the compact two-door body, adaptive M suspension, larger brakes and a sport exhaust with a smooth, strong six-cylinder. The xDrive system is rear-biased in normal driving, so the car keeps much of the BMW character while adding grip. The cabin seats four, with a usable but tight rear bench and a reasonable boot for the class.
Buying one today
Known N55 weak points include leaking valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets and failures of the electric water pump and thermostat. On xDrive cars, check for transfer case noise or shudder, and inspect tyres, as mismatched wear can strain the AWD system.
