ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 535I GRAN TURISMO
The 2016 BMW 535i Gran Turismo is the six-cylinder version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo, coded F07: a large five-door hatchback with a raised roofline that sits between a saloon and an SUV. It uses the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version with the eight-speed automatic; xDrive all-wheel drive was also offered.
Where it sits
The Gran Turismo was introduced for the 2010 model year and received a facelift for 2014 that added a longer rear end, a larger boot and revised lights. The 2016 car is part of that updated range, with the 2017 model year the last before the G32 6 Series Gran Turismo took its place. It was built in Dingolfing, Germany.
Practicality
The F07 rides on a 3,070 mm wheelbase, the same as the regular-length F01 7 Series, so rear legroom is generous. Combined with the higher seating position and the wide-opening tailgate, it offers more space and easier access than the 535i saloon, at the cost of extra weight and a less sporty feel.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N55 issues include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, electric water pump and thermostat failures and worn ignition coils. On the Gran Turismo, also check the tailgate mechanism, rear air suspension (where fitted) and the many electrical comfort features.
Rivals
There were few direct equivalents. The closest alternatives were the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera, along with large luxury crossovers such as BMW’s own X5.
