ABOUT THE 2010 BMW 535I GRAN TURISMO
The 2010 BMW 535i Gran Turismo is the launch-year six-cylinder version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), a five-door hatchback that mixes saloon, estate and crossover ideas. It uses the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
A new kind of BMW
The F07 went on sale for the 2010 model year as the first member of the new-generation 5 Series family, ahead of the F10 saloon. It sits on the long wheelbase of the 7 Series and has a raised seating position, frameless door windows and a two-piece tailgate that can open as a small bootlid or a full hatch. The 535i GT also introduced the single twin-scroll-turbo N55 engine. A V8 550i GT and xDrive all-wheel-drive versions were also offered.
Practicality
Rear legroom is generous, and the rear seats can slide and recline on many cars. The boot is large with the seats folded, though the sloping roof means it carries less than a 5 Series Touring estate would.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N55 issues include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, the electric water pump and thermostat, and carbon build-up. The air suspension at the rear, the complex electronics and the tailgate mechanisms should also be checked.
Rivals
Few cars took exactly the same approach. Alternatives included the Mercedes-Benz R-Class and E-Class wagon, the Acura ZDX, and the Porsche Panamera for buyers wanting a sporting large hatchback.
