ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 535I GRAN TURISMO
The 2011 BMW 535i Gran Turismo is the six-cylinder version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), a large five-door hatchback that blends saloon, estate and crossover ideas. It uses the 3.0-litre N55 single-turbo inline-six rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft and, in this entry, drives the rear wheels; an xDrive all-wheel-drive version was also offered. Power goes through an eight-speed automatic.
An unusual 5 Series
The Gran Turismo arrived in the US for the 2010 model year, making 2011 its second year on sale. Despite the name, it shares much of its platform with the F01 7 Series rather than the 5 Series sedan, including the long 3,070 mm wheelbase. Its tailgate is a two-way design: the glass section alone can open like a saloon boot lid, or the whole tailgate can lift like a hatchback. The 535i GT sat below the V8 550i GT in the range.
Practicality
The GT’s main appeal is space. Its raised seating position and tall roof give rear passengers generous legroom and headroom, with easier access than in a low-slung sedan. The boot is large, and folding the rear seats creates an estate-like load area.
Buying one today
The N55 is generally more reliable than the earlier N54, but commonly reported issues include valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks, electric water pump failure and oil leaks from the oil pan gasket. The self-levelling rear air suspension should be checked for leaks and sagging.
Rivals
The 535i GT had few direct rivals. Buyers often compared it with the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, the Porsche Panamera at a higher level, or conventional luxury sedans and SUVs such as BMW’s own X5.
