ABOUT THE 2012 BMW 535I GRAN TURISMO
The 2012 BMW 535i Gran Turismo is the six-cylinder version of the F07 5 Series GT, a large five-door hatchback built in Dingolfing, Germany, that blends saloon, estate and crossover ideas. It is powered by the N55 3.0-litre single-turbo inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, drives the rear wheels and uses an eight-speed automatic. An xDrive all-wheel-drive version and a V8 550i GT were also offered.
An unusual 5 Series
The Gran Turismo arrived for the 2010 model year and shared much of its platform with the 7 Series, including a longer wheelbase than the 5 Series saloon. Its frameless doors and higher seating position set it apart, and its two-mode tailgate can open either as a small boot lid or as a full hatchback. 2012 was its third model year; the facelifted version came later.
Practicality
Rear passengers get very generous legroom, and the rear seats can slide and recline on some versions. With the seats folded, the hatch makes the GT more versatile than the saloon, though the sloping roof limits tall loads compared with an X5.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N55 issues include leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, electric water pump failure and wastegate rattle. Rear air suspension, standard on this car, can develop leaks with age. The GT had few direct rivals; buyers might also have considered the Audi A7 3.0T and Porsche Panamera.
