ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 328I
The 2016 BMW 328i is the core rear-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation 3 Series saloon (F30) in its first year after the mid-life update. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.
A transitional year
For 2016 the F30 received its Life Cycle Impulse update, with revised headlights and LED tail lights, reshaped bumpers, retuned suspension and steering, and interior trim changes. The range also gained the new 340i with BMW’s latest six-cylinder engine. The 328i, however, kept the familiar N20 for one more year; for 2017 it was replaced by the 330i with BMW’s newer modular four-cylinder. The 2016 328i is therefore the only year that combines the facelifted body with the N20 engine in the 328i saloon.
What it is like
The 328i was the best-selling heart of the range, balancing performance and economy. The F30’s longer wheelbase gives a usable rear seat and a 480-litre boot, and the eight-speed automatic contributes to official figures of 23 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, roughly 10.2 and 6.7 L/100km.
Buying one today
Timing chain guide wear is the N20’s best-known weakness, so listen for a rattle on a cold start. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets, and electric coolant pump failures, are also commonly reported on higher-mileage cars.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi A4 2.0T, the Mercedes-Benz C300, the Lexus IS 200t and the Cadillac ATS.
