The 2008 BMW 328i is the core model of the fifth-generation 3 Series saloon (E90), with an N52 3.0-litre inline-six producing 230 hp and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) and rear-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was standard.
Before the facelift
The 328i name replaced the 325i for the 2007 model year. 2008 was the last year of the original E90 saloon before its mid-life update for 2009, and the last year in which BMW used the “xi” badge for all-wheel-drive models. The same model year saw the return of an M3 saloon, this time with a V8 engine.
What it is like
The naturally aspirated six is smooth and responsive, and the E90 has a reputation for balanced handling. Many cars were fitted with run-flat tyres, which make the ride firmer than on conventional tyres.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N52 problems include failure of the electric water pump and thermostat, often with little warning, and oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets. Check whether the water pump has already been replaced and whether iDrive, if fitted, and other electronics work properly.
