ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 328I

The 2013 BMW 328i is the four-cylinder saloon from the sixth-generation 3 Series (F30). Its 2.0-litre N20 turbocharged engine delivers 240 hp and 255 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also available.

Second year of the F30

The F30 launched for 2012 with the 328i and 335i. For 2013, BMW broadened the range with all-wheel-drive xDrive versions of both and the ActiveHybrid 3, making 2013 the first full model year of a wider line-up. The 328i’s turbo four replaced the six-cylinder engine of the earlier 328i, improving fuel economy.

On the road

The F30 is larger and roomier than the E90 it replaced, with a longer wheelbase giving more rear legroom and a bigger boot. Line packages such as Sport, Luxury and Modern changed the trim and styling, and the M Sport package added firmer suspension. The eight-speed automatic and standard auto stop-start help keep fuel consumption low for a car with this performance.

The N20 engine’s timing chain guides are a widely reported weak point on early cars, so listen for chain rattle and check service records. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket and electric water pump failures are also common reports.

Rivals

In 2013 the 328i competed with the Audi A4 2.0T, Mercedes-Benz C250, Lexus IS 250 and Cadillac ATS.
