The 2014 BMW 550i is the V8 flagship of the regular sixth-generation 5 Series saloon (F10), below only the M5. For 2014 it gained the updated N63TU 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, now rated at 445 hp and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm), driving the rear wheels. The mid-life update
The 2014 model year brought the F10’s facelift (LCI), with revised headlights and bumpers, an updated iDrive system and new options. The bigger news for the 550i was under the bonnet: the reworked V8 added Valvetronic variable valve lift and a jump of 45 hp over the original engine, making the 2014 car a clear step up from 2011–2013 examples.
What it is like
This is a refined, very fast long-distance saloon, with effortless overtaking and a quiet cabin. Rear passengers get generous space thanks to the 2,968 mm wheelbase, and the boot is large enough for family luggage. Economy is the obvious trade-off, with an EPA rating of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway (roughly 13.8 and 9.4 L/100km).
Buying one today
The N63 family has a well-known reputation for high oil consumption, valve-stem seal wear, timing-chain problems, leaking turbo coolant and oil lines, and injector failures. The TU version is regarded as an improvement, but a detailed service record and a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist are strongly advised.
