ABOUT THE 2010 BMW 550I

The 2010 BMW 550i is the V8 sedan from the fifth-generation 5 Series (E60). It uses BMW’s naturally aspirated 4.8-litre N62 V8, rated at 360 hp and 360 lb-ft, and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.

End of the E60

The 2010 model year was the last for the E60 sedan, which was replaced by the F10 for 2011. That makes the 2010 car the final 5 Series sold in the US with a naturally aspirated V8, as the F10 550i moved to a twin-turbo 4.4-litre engine. Late E60s also benefit from the mid-life update introduced for 2008, which brought revised lights and bumpers and interior changes.

What it is like

The N62 gives smooth, linear power and a strong V8 sound, and the 550i is a fast, comfortable long-distance sedan. Options included Active Steering, active anti-roll bars and a head-up display, while iDrive was standard.

The N62 has well-known weak points: valve-stem seals that wear and cause blue smoke and oil consumption, leaks from the valve-cover gaskets and the alternator bracket seal, and cooling-system parts including the water pump. Repairs are labour-intensive, so a detailed service history matters. The E60’s electronics can also be expensive to diagnose.

Rivals

The 550i competed with the Mercedes-Benz E550, Audi A6 4.2 quattro, Jaguar XF Supercharged and Lexus GS 460.
