The 2013 BMW 550i is a sedan. It has a 4.4-litre turbocharged eight-cylinder engine producing 400 hp (298 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 5.2 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 550I
The 2013 BMW 550i is the V8, rear-wheel-drive version of the F10 5 Series saloon in its final model year before the mid-life update. It uses the 4.4-litre twin-turbo N63 V8, rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic, which was by far the more common choice than the six-speed manual.
Before the facelift
For 2013 the 5 Series family was at its widest so far, with the 528i, 535i, the new ActiveHybrid 5 and the 550i, plus the M5 above. The 2013 550i is the last of the pre-facelift V8 cars; for 2014 BMW updated the F10 with revised styling and a reworked twin-turbo V8 with more power. That makes the 2013 model the most developed version of the original 400 hp specification.
Ownership
The 550i offers a refined, rapid drive and a large cabin and boot. Standard equipment was generous, and options such as the M Sport package, adaptive dampers, a head-up display and night vision are common on used examples. The car’s weight shows in its tyre and brake wear.

Problems commonly reported on the N63 include high oil consumption, valve stem seal leaks causing smoke on start-up, timing chain stretch and injector failures. Check service records for BMW’s N63 programme work, a cooling system in good order and recent oil changes at short intervals. Electrical faults and worn front suspension bushings are also seen at higher mileages.
Rivals
Alternatives included the Mercedes-Benz E550, Audi S6, Lexus GS 350 and Jaguar XF.
