The 2011 BMW 335d is the diesel version of the E90 3 Series saloon sold in North America from 2009. It uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel inline-six producing 265 hp and a substantial 425 lb-ft (about 580 Nm) of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.
The last year of the 335d
2011 was the third and final model year for the 335d, as the E90 saloon was replaced by the F30 for 2012 and BMW did not continue a diesel 3 Series in the US until the later 328d. It was part of BMW’s “Advanced Diesel” push alongside the X5 xDrive35d, and used a urea injection (AdBlue) system to meet US emissions rules.
Performance and economy
The huge low-rev torque gives the 335d strong in-gear acceleration, and BMW quoted 0–60 mph in about 6.0 seconds. EPA ratings were 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway (about 10.2 and 6.5 L/100km), so it combined six-cylinder pace with economy that petrol 3 Series models could not match on the highway. The car also wore the facelifted E90 styling and an updated iDrive.
Buying one today
Commonly reported issues involve the emissions equipment: NOx sensors, the urea tank heater and pump, and the diesel particulate filter, which can clog on cars used mainly for short trips. Turbo actuators, intake carbon build-up, and the usual E90 oil leaks are also worth checking. A specialist familiar with the diesel is valuable.
