ABOUT THE 2010 BMW 335D

The 2010 BMW 335d is the diesel version of the E90 3 Series saloon, sold in the US in the facelifted form of the fifth generation. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged M57 inline-six diesel produces 265 hp and a substantial 425 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.

BMW’s US diesel

The 335d went on sale in the US for 2009, alongside the X5 xDrive35d, as part of BMW’s “Advanced Diesel” push. It used a urea-based exhaust treatment system (BMW BluePerformance) to meet emissions standards in all 50 states. The 2010 model is its second year; it was sold until 2011, after which the E90 saloon was replaced by the F30.

Performance and economy

The huge torque gives the 335d strong in-gear acceleration that rivals the petrol 335i in everyday driving. The EPA rated it at 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, which is about 10.2 and 6.5 L/100km. A diesel engine adds weight to the nose, but handling remains composed.

Commonly reported issues include diesel particulate filter and EGR-related faults, problems with the urea (DEF) tank and heater, and the cost of maintaining the exhaust aftertreatment. Check for warning lights and a full service history.

Rivals

Diesel saloons were scarce in the US at the time; the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI were smaller diesel alternatives, while petrol rivals included the Audi A4 3.2 quattro and Lexus IS 350.
