ABOUT THE 2009 BMW 335D
The 2009 BMW 335d is the diesel version of the fifth-generation 3 Series saloon (E90), introduced to the US with the facelifted range for that model year. It uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel inline-six producing 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.
BMW’s diesel return
The 335d, marketed with the BMW Advanced Diesel name, was BMW’s first diesel car sold in the US in many years, arriving alongside the X5 xDrive35d. It used selective catalytic reduction with a urea-based fluid tank to meet emissions rules in all 50 states. The 2009 car is from the launch year; the model ran until 2011, and the E90 had been facelifted for 2009 with revised lights and an updated interior.
What it is like
The diesel’s very large torque figure gives strong acceleration in everyday driving, and the EPA rated it at 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, about 10.2 and 6.5 L/100km. It shares the saloon’s 2,760 mm wheelbase and usable cabin, though the heavier engine adds weight at the front compared with the petrol 335i.
Buying one today
Known weak points include emissions-system faults such as NOx sensor and diesel exhaust fluid heater or pump failures, clogged diesel particulate filters and EGR problems. Cars used mainly for short trips are more likely to suffer, so ask about driving history and repairs.
Rivals
The only direct diesel rival in its class was the Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTEC from the class above; petrol alternatives included the Audi A4 3.2 quattro and Lexus IS 350.
