ABOUT THE 2005 FORD FOCUS

The 2005 Ford Focus is the facelifted version of the first-generation North American Focus, and this entry covers the four-door saloon, sold for 2005 as the ZX4. It uses a 2.0-litre Duratec four-cylinder producing 136 hp and 133 lb-ft (180 Nm), driving the front wheels. This entry covers the version with the four-speed automatic; a five-speed manual was also offered.

What changed for 2005

2005 brought the most significant update of the Focus’s North American life. The front end was restyled, the interior was redesigned with a new dashboard and better materials, and the range was reorganised into ZX3 three-door, ZX5 five-door, ZX4 saloon and ZXW estate body styles. The older Zetec and split-port engines were replaced by Duratec units developed with Mazda: the 2.0-litre seen here and a larger 2.3-litre. North American Focus production took place in Wayne, Michigan.

What it is like

The Focus was known for its well-sorted chassis, which gives it tidy handling and a composed ride for a compact car. The saloon offers a usefully large boot and seating for five. EPA ratings of around 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway (roughly 10.7 and 8.1 L/100km) are reasonable for the era.

Buying one today

The four-speed automatic is a commonly reported weak point, with harsh shifting and failures noted by many owners, so a manual car may be the safer purchase. Also check for rust around the sills and rear wheel arches, worn engine and suspension mounts, and the condition of the rear drum brakes.

Rivals

It competed with the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla, the Mazda3, the Chevrolet Cobalt and the Hyundai Elantra.
