The 2024 BMW 230i Coupe is the entry point to the second-generation 2 Series Coupe (G42), which went on sale for the 2022 model year. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive car; an xDrive all-wheel-drive version was also sold.
Where it sits
Unlike the front-wheel-drive-based 2 Series Gran Coupe, the G42 shares its rear-drive platform with the 3 and 4 Series, which gives it more traditional BMW handling balance. By its third model year the 230i had settled in as the sensible alternative to the much faster M240i, with the same compact two-door shape and four seats.
Practicality
The rear bench seats two, and adults will find headroom tight on longer journeys. The boot is reasonably deep for a car of this size, and the rear seats fold to extend it. The car is built at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.
