ABOUT THE 2023 BMW 230I COUPE
The 2023 BMW 230i Coupe is the entry-level version of the second-generation 2 Series Coupe (G42), in its second model year after launching for 2022. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder (B46) producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic, which is the only gearbox offered. An all-wheel-drive 230i xDrive was also available.
A rear-drive survivor
While the 2 Series Gran Coupe moved to a front-wheel-drive platform, the G42 coupe stayed rear-wheel drive, sharing its underpinnings with the G20 3 Series and G22 4 Series. It is longer, wider and lower than the F22 it replaced. The G42 is built at BMW’s plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, rather than in Germany.
Practicality
The 230i seats four, with a rear bench that suits children or adults on short trips. The boot is reasonable for a compact coupe and the rear seats fold for longer items. As a second-year car, the 2023 model is closely related to the launch-year version.
Buying one today
The B46/B48 four-cylinder has a good reliability record in BMWs of this era. Check for coolant leaks, tyre wear (many cars have performance tyres) and kerbed wheels, and confirm that any software updates have been carried out.
