ABOUT THE 2022 BMW M8 COMPETITION GRAN COUPE
The 2022 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe is the four-door M version of the second-generation 8 Series (G16). It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, rated at 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) in Competition form, with M xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. It is built in Dingolfing, Germany.
Where 2022 fits
The 8 Series Gran Coupe and the M8 Gran Coupe arrived for the 2020 model year, giving BMW a four-door rival to Porsche’s Panamera. The 2022 car is the last before the 8 Series facelift for 2023, which brought revised lighting and a larger touchscreen. M xDrive can be switched to a rear-wheel-drive mode for track use.
What it is like
The Gran Coupe body is longer than the two-door 8 Series, with a longer wheelbase of 3,023 mm and two extra doors, making the rear seats far more usable for adults. The V8 delivers huge acceleration, and the car balances serious performance with long-distance comfort. Carbon-ceramic brakes were optional.
Buying one today
The S63 engine needs careful maintenance: oil consumption and heat stress on hoses and seals are commonly reported on BMW’s twin-turbo V8s. Running costs for tyres, brakes and servicing are high. A full BMW service history is essential.
Rivals
Competitors included the Porsche Panamera Turbo, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe and the Audi RS 7.
