ABOUT THE 2021 BMW X7 M50I
The 2021 BMW X7 M50i is the V8-powered M Performance version of BMW’s largest SUV, the G07 X7, which launched for 2019. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Where it sits
The M50i replaced the xDrive50i as the X7’s V8 model for the 2020 model year, so 2021 was its second year in the range. It adds M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential, a sports exhaust and M Performance styling details to the X7’s standard two-axle air suspension. In the US the only other engine was the six-cylinder xDrive40i, and the Alpina XB7 sat above both from 2021.
Practicality
The X7 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, alongside the X5 and X6. With a 3,105 mm wheelbase it offers three rows of seats; a second-row bench gives seven seats, and optional captain’s chairs reduce that to six. The third row is usable by adults on shorter journeys, and the split tailgate eases loading.
Buying one today
This is a heavy, complex vehicle, so maintenance history matters. Commonly reported items on BMW’s twin-turbo V8 include oil consumption and oil and coolant leaks, while air-suspension components and the many electronic systems can be costly when they fail.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580, Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade.
