ABOUT THE 2020 BMW X7 M50I
The 2020 BMW X7 M50i is the high-performance version of the G07 X7, BMW’s largest SUV, with three rows of seats and up to seven seats. It is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Power comes from a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), sent through an eight-speed automatic to xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
New for 2020
The X7 launched for the 2019 model year with the six-cylinder xDrive40i and the V8 xDrive50i. For 2020 the M50i replaced the xDrive50i as the V8 model, bringing a substantial increase in output along with M Performance chassis and styling upgrades, including an M Sport differential, M Sport brakes and a sport exhaust.
Space and comfort
Two-axle air suspension is standard on the X7, helping to smooth the ride despite the large wheels. The third row is usable by adults on shorter journeys, and power-folding seats make it easy to switch between passenger and cargo use. A six-seat layout with second-row captain’s chairs was available.
Buying one today
The twin-turbo V8 makes the M50i quick but thirsty and costly to run. BMW’s twin-turbo V8s are commonly reported to suffer from oil leaks and higher oil consumption with age, and the air suspension and extensive electronics add to maintenance demands. A full dealer service history and a pre-purchase inspection are advised.
Rivals
The X7 M50i competed with the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580, Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade.
