ABOUT THE 2021 BMW X5 XDRIVE40I
The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder petrol version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05), in its third model year. It uses the B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six rated at 335 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
Where 2021 sits
The G05 launched for 2019, and by 2021 the range had broadened: the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e had arrived, and the V8 M50i and full X5 M sat above the xDrive40i. The xDrive40i remained the best-selling version, and a rear-drive sDrive40i was also offered. This US version has no mild-hybrid system; the 48-volt setup arrived with the later facelift.
Practicality
Every X5 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The G05 has a 2,975 mm wheelbase, a spacious five-seat cabin and a two-piece tailgate, and an optional third row made it a seven-seater for occasional use. The B58 six is smooth and makes the X5 a capable tow vehicle when properly equipped.
Buying one today
The B58 is widely regarded as one of BMW’s more dependable engines, but commonly reported issues include coolant leaks from the expansion tank and plastic pipes and oil-filter-housing gasket leaks. On cars with the optional two-axle air suspension, check that the vehicle sits level and raises and lowers properly.
Rivals
Rivals included the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, Audi Q7 55 TFSI, Volvo XC90 T6, Porsche Cayenne and Lincoln Aviator.
