ABOUT THE 2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE40I
The 2020 BMW X5 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05), a mid-size luxury SUV. It is powered by the B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 335 hp and 330 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
Second year of the G05
The G05 X5 was launched for the 2019 model year, built like every X5 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. For 2020 the range grew around the xDrive40i: a rear-drive sDrive40i was added, along with the V8 M50i, the high-performance X5 M and X5 M Competition. The xDrive40i remained the best-selling core model, combining strong performance with better fuel economy than the V8 versions.
Practicality and technology
The G05 has a spacious five-seat cabin, with an optional third row for occasional use, and a split tailgate that makes loading easier. Live Cockpit Professional, with twin 12.3-inch displays, came as standard, and options included two-axle air suspension, an off-road package and a wide array of driver-assistance systems.
Buying one today
The B58 inline-six is widely regarded as robust. Commonly reported issues include coolant leaks from the expansion tank and hoses and, on cars with air suspension, eventual wear in springs and compressors. Make sure software updates have been applied, as the X5’s complex electronics can produce warning lights.
Rivals
In 2020 the X5 xDrive40i competed with the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, Audi Q7 and Q8, Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90 and Lincoln Aviator.
