ABOUT THE 2019 BMW X5 XDRIVE40I
The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i is the launch-year version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05), a five-seat midsize SUV built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It uses BMW’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 335 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
An all-new X5
The G05 replaced the F15 for the 2019 model year on BMW’s CLAR platform, with a larger body, a longer wheelbase of 2,975 mm and a much more modern cabin. Two 12.3-inch screens formed the Live Cockpit Professional display, and options included two-axle air suspension, an off-road package and a third row of seats. At launch the range consisted of the xDrive40i and the V8 xDrive50i, with more versions added later.
What it is like
The inline-six suits the X5 well, offering smooth, strong performance with better economy than the V8. The cabin is spacious, with plenty of rear legroom, and the split tailgate makes loading easier. Ride quality depends heavily on wheel size and whether the optional air suspension is fitted.
Buying one today
As a first-year model, a 2019 car may have had several software updates and recalls; check that dealer work is up to date. The B58 is generally robust, though coolant leaks and oil filter housing gasket seepage are commonly reported. On air-suspension cars, check for sagging or warning messages.
Rivals
The X5 xDrive40i competed with the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
