ABOUT THE 2020 BMW X5 M50I
The 2020 BMW X5 M50i is the V8-powered M Performance version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05), which had gone on sale for 2019. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
New for 2020
The M50i badge was new to the US X5 for the 2020 model year, replacing the xDrive50i as the V8 option. Alongside the extra power, it brought M Sport brakes, adaptive M suspension with an M Sport differential, a sports exhaust and Cerium Grey exterior details. It sat between the six-cylinder xDrive40i and the full X5 M, which also returned for 2020.
Practicality
Like every X5, the M50i was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It is a roomy five-seat SUV with a two-piece split tailgate and a large, square boot, and the V8 makes it a capable tow vehicle, although fuel consumption is high in daily use.
Buying one today
The N63 V8 family has a mixed reputation; later versions are improved, but commonly reported issues include oil consumption, valve-cover and coolant leaks and ageing ignition parts. Check air-suspension operation if fitted and make sure servicing has been done on time.
Rivals
Rivals included the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53, Porsche Cayenne S and Audi SQ7.
