ABOUT THE 2020 BMW M240I COUPE
The 2020 BMW M240i Coupe is the six-cylinder M Performance version of the F22 2 Series, a compact rear-wheel-drive coupe built in Leipzig, Germany. Its B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic, for which BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds; a six-speed manual and an xDrive all-wheel-drive version were also offered.
Late in the F22’s life
The M240i replaced the M235i for the 2017 model year, when the B58 engine took over from the N55. By 2020 the F22 was nearing the end of its run, with only the 2021 model year left before the G42 2 Series Coupe arrived for 2022. For many buyers, the late F22 M240i represents a last chance at a compact, rear-drive BMW coupe with a traditional design.
What it is like
The M240i offers much of the M2’s performance in a more comfortable, everyday package. The strong six-cylinder, balanced chassis and compact dimensions give it a lively character, while the cabin has room for four and a reasonable boot. It is often recommended as a more affordable alternative to the M2.
Buying one today
The B58 engine is generally durable. Coolant leaks and oil filter housing gasket seepage are commonly reported as cars age. Check for signs of tuning, which is popular with this engine, and look for even tyre wear and a clean service history.
Rivals
It shares its engine family with the Toyota GR Supra, which launched for 2020. Other rivals included the Mercedes-AMG C 43 Coupe and Audi S5 Coupe.
