ABOUT THE 2017 BMW X6 SDRIVE35I
The 2017 BMW X6 sDrive35i is the rear-wheel-drive, six-cylinder version of the second-generation X6 (F16), BMW’s coupe-styled “Sports Activity Coupe”. It uses the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (400 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic. Like every X6, it was built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Where it sits
The F16 X6 arrived for the 2015 model year, so 2017 was the middle of its run. The sDrive35i was the entry model and the only X6 offered without all-wheel drive in the US, sitting below the xDrive35i, the V8 xDrive50i and the X6 M. Choosing rear-wheel drive saves some weight and cost compared with the xDrive35i, making it a choice for buyers in warmer climates.
What it is like
Based on the F15 X5, the X6 shares its 2,933 mm wheelbase but trades some practicality for its sloping roofline. It seats five, though rear headroom is reduced compared with the X5, and the boot is smaller. On the road it feels stable and composed, and the six-cylinder gives adequate rather than outstanding performance in a vehicle of this weight.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N55 issues include valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks, electric water pump failure and ignition coil wear. Check the suspension for worn bushes and the electronics and infotainment for faults.
Rivals
The X6 competed with the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, while buyers also considered the Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Macan.
