The 2015 BMW X6 sDrive35i is the rear-wheel-drive entry model of the second-generation X6 (F16), a large coupe-styled SUV. It uses the 3.0-litre N55 single-turbo inline-six rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It was the first X6 offered in the US with rear-wheel drive only.
A new generation
The F16 X6 arrived for the 2015 model year, based on the then-new F15 X5 and sharing its 2,933 mm wheelbase. The styling was evolutionary, but the car gained a more upmarket interior, improved infotainment and better efficiency. Alongside the sDrive35i, the range included the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i and the V8 xDrive50i, with the X6 M following later. All were built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.
What it is like
Without the xDrive system, the sDrive35i is lighter and slightly more efficient than its all-wheel-drive sibling, making it appealing in warm climates where all-weather traction matters less. The six-cylinder engine provides strong, smooth performance. The X6 seats five, though the sloping roof limits rear headroom and boot space compared with the X5, and there is no third-row option.
Buying one today
The N55 engine is generally regarded as more robust than the earlier N54, but commonly reported issues include oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, oil pan leaks and electric water pump failure. Check that the electronics and air-conditioning system work correctly, and inspect the large tyres for uneven wear.
