ABOUT THE 2016 BMW M2

The 2016 BMW M2 is the first model year of BMW M’s compact performance coupe (F87), a two-door, four-seat car rather than the saloon described elsewhere in this data. Its turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six produces 365 hp and 343 lb-ft (465 Nm), with a short-term overboost to 369 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission (DCT); a six-speed manual was also offered.

Launch year

The M2 replaced the 1 Series M Coupe as BMW’s smallest M car. Its engine is based on the N55 used in the M235i but adds pistons and other parts from the M3 and M4 engine. Much of its aluminium front and rear suspension also comes from the M3 and M4, with an electronically controlled Active M Differential. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds with the DCT, and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Practicality

The rear seats are usable for two adults on shorter trips, and the boot is the same as the 2 Series coupe’s, so the M2 works as an everyday car. The ride is firm, and the wide wheel arches give it a much more aggressive stance than the regular 2 Series.

Buying one today

Commonly reported issues on the N55-based engine include oil-filter housing and valve-cover gasket leaks, electric water pump failure and charge-pipe cracks, especially on tuned cars. Check for signs of track use, brake and tyre wear, and correct DCT operation.

Rivals

The M2 competed with the Porsche Cayman, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and the Ford Focus RS.
