ABOUT THE 2017 BMW M2
The 2017 BMW M2 is the compact M car based on the 2 Series Coupe (F87), a two-door, four-seat coupe. It uses a specially developed version of BMW’s N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 365 hp and 343 lb-ft (465 Nm). It drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission; a six-speed manual was also offered.
Where 2017 sits
The M2 went on sale in the US for 2016 and was quickly seen as a spiritual successor to the 1 Series M Coupe. 2017 was its second year and remained very close to the launch car, before a light facelift for 2018. The N55-based M2 was then replaced for 2019 by the M2 Competition, which used the S55 engine from the M3 and M4.
What it is like
Short and wide, the M2 uses aluminium front and rear suspension components derived from the M3 and M4, together with an Active M Differential. The result is a lively, playful car with plenty of grip and a strong, characterful engine. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds with the dual-clutch gearbox (4.4 with the manual). The rear seats are usable for two.
Buying one today
The N55-based engine is generally robust in this application, but oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing, and electric water pump failures, are commonly reported. Look for signs of hard track use, such as worn brakes and tyres, and check the condition of the clutch on manual cars.
Rivals
Rivals included the Porsche 718 Cayman, the Audi RS 3, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and the Ford Focus RS.
