ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 528I XDRIVE
The 2016 BMW 528i xDrive is the four-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the F10 5 Series saloon in its final model year. Power comes from the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive system.
The end of the F10
The 2016 car is the last of the sixth-generation 5 Series. It carries the updated styling introduced for 2014, with revised headlights and reshaped bumpers, along with interior and equipment updates made during the car’s later years. For 2017 the G30 5 Series arrived, and the 528i name was retired in favour of the 530i with BMW’s newer modular four-cylinder. As a run-out model, the 2016 528i xDrive benefits from several years of production refinement.
Practicality
The F10 is a full-size executive saloon with a long 2,968 mm wheelbase, so rear-seat space is generous and the boot comfortably handles family luggage. xDrive makes it a sensible choice in regions with snowy winters, and the four-cylinder engine keeps running costs lower than the six-cylinder 535i xDrive.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N20 issues include timing chain guide wear, oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets, and electric coolant pump failures. On high-mileage F10s, check the front suspension bushes and control arms, and make sure all electronic features, including the iDrive screen and parking sensors, work correctly.
Rivals
In 2016 the 528i xDrive competed with the Audi A6 2.0T quattro, the Mercedes-Benz E350 4MATIC and the Lexus GS 350 AWD.
