The 2012 BMW 528i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive, four-cylinder version of the sixth-generation 5 Series saloon (F10). It uses BMW’s N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
A four-cylinder 5 Series
The 2012 model year was a turning point for the US 528i: the naturally aspirated six-cylinder used in 2011 was replaced by the new turbocharged four. Although it gave up two cylinders, the N20 delivered more torque at lower revs and better fuel economy, and the eight-speed automatic helped make the most of it. The F10 itself was only in its second model year, so the 2012 car carries the original front and rear styling.
What it is like
The F10 is a large, comfortable executive saloon with a spacious rear seat and a sizeable boot. The four-cylinder engine is less smooth-sounding than the six it replaced but performance is similar in everyday driving. xDrive adds traction in poor weather at a small cost in weight and economy.
