The last 435i
The Gran Coupe joined the 4 Series range for 2015, adding a pair of rear doors and a large hatchback-style tailgate to the coupe’s low roofline. 2016 was the final year for the 435i name: for 2017 BMW introduced the 440i with the newer B58 engine, along with a facelift for the 4 Series range. The 2016 car therefore represents the original form of the six-cylinder Gran Coupe.
Practicality
The Gran Coupe shares its 2,810 mm wheelbase with the 3 Series saloon, so rear legroom is similar, although headroom is reduced by the sloping roof. Its tailgate opens to a larger, more versatile load area than the saloon’s boot, and the rear seats fold to extend it further.
Buying one today
The N55 is generally considered more durable than the earlier N54, but commonly reported problems include oil-filter housing and valve-cover gasket leaks, electric water pump failure and wastegate rattle on some engines.
