ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 320I XDRIVE
The 2016 BMW 320i xDrive is the entry-level all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation 3 Series sedan (F30), in its facelifted form. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 180 hp and 200 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The facelift year
The F30 received its mid-life update for the 2016 model year. Changes included revised headlights and tail lights, reshaped bumpers, interior trim updates and retuned suspension and steering. Elsewhere in the range the 340i replaced the 335i and gained a new engine, but the 320i kept its relatively modest output as the gateway to 3 Series ownership. It shares the F30’s 2,810 mm wheelbase with the rest of the sedan range.
What it is like
The 320i xDrive is aimed at buyers who want the badge, the cabin and all-weather traction rather than strong performance. It is noticeably slower than the 328i, but it is smooth and economical, and xDrive makes it a sensible choice in snowy climates. The cabin seats five, with a usable boot and split-folding rear seats on many cars.
Buying one today
Check service records for regular oil changes, which matter on any turbocharged engine. On BMW’s four-cylinder turbo engines of this era, commonly reported issues include oil filter housing gasket leaks, valve cover leaks and electric coolant pump failure. Also inspect the xDrive transfer case for smooth operation and listen for clunks at low speed.
Rivals
The 320i xDrive’s rivals included the Audi A4 quattro, the Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC, the Lexus IS 300 AWD, the Infiniti Q50 AWD and the Cadillac ATS with all-wheel drive.
