ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 320I XDRIVE
The 2015 BMW 320i xDrive is the entry-level all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation 3 Series saloon (F30). It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (N20) in a lower state of tune, rated at 180 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, with xDrive all-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.
The last pre-facelift year
The 320i was added to the F30 range for the 2013 model year to give buyers a more affordable way into the 3 Series, and an xDrive version followed. The 2015 model year was the final year of the original F30; for 2016 the 3 Series received its mid-life update with revised lights, bumpers and interior trim. The 2015 car therefore has the original styling, and it is the last 320i xDrive before the facelift.
What it is like
The 320i uses the same body, cabin and chassis as the 328i, so it shares the roomier rear seat and larger boot that the F30 brought over the previous E90. The engine’s lower output means more modest performance, but the eight-speed automatic keeps it in its torque band and economy is good. The F30’s 2,810 mm wheelbase gives a comfortable ride for its class.
Buying one today
The N20 engine’s best-known weak point is wear of the timing chain guides, which can cause a rattle and, in severe cases, engine damage. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets and electric coolant pump failures are also commonly reported.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi A4 2.0T quattro, the Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC and the Lexus IS 250 AWD.
