2016 BMW 228i
The 2016 BMW 228i is a coupe. It has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 240 hp (179 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 6.1 seconds and top speed is 130 mph (209 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 228I
The 2016 BMW 228i is the four-cylinder model of the first-generation 2 Series, offered as a coupe (F22) and convertible (F23), and 2016 was its final year. Its N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder makes 240 hp and 255 lb-ft (350 Nm). This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive car with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual and xDrive all-wheel drive were also available.
Last of the 228i
The 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupe for 2014. For 2017 the 228i was succeeded by the 230i, which moved to BMW’s newer modular 2.0-litre engine with 248 hp, so the 2016 car is the last 2 Series sold with the N20.
What it is like
Compact, rear-wheel drive and relatively light, the 228i offers balanced handling, and its turbocharged engine provides strong mid-range pull. The rear seats are best for occasional use, while the boot is reasonable for a small coupe. See horsepower vs torque explained for why that mid-range torque matters.
Buying one today
The N20 is known for timing chain guide wear, most often on earlier production engines; a whine from the front of the engine is a warning sign, and records of chain replacement are reassuring. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets are also commonly reported.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 and Ford Mustang EcoBoost.
