ABOUT THE 2014 BMW 228I
The 2014 BMW 228i is the four-cylinder launch model of the 2 Series Coupe (F22), a compact rear-wheel-drive two-door. It uses BMW’s 2.0-litre turbocharged N20 four-cylinder, producing 240 hp and 255 lb-ft (350 Nm). This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was a no-cost option.
A new name for the small coupe
The 2014 model year was the first for the 2 Series, which replaced the 1 Series coupe (sold in the US as the 128i). The 228i swapped the old car’s naturally aspirated six for a turbocharged four with more torque and better fuel economy, and the new body was longer and roomier. It launched alongside the six-cylinder M235i; the convertible and all-wheel-drive xDrive versions followed for 2015.
What it is like
Compact dimensions, rear-wheel drive and a strong mid-range make the 228i one of the more engaging small cars of its time. With the automatic it is quick and also economical, with highway economy of around 35 mpg (about 6.7 L/100km). It is a four-seater with two rear seats suited to occasional use, and a usable boot.

The N20 engine’s timing-chain guides are a widely reported weak point, particularly on earlier engines, so listen for chain rattle at start-up and look for evidence of the work being done. Oil-filter-housing gasket leaks and electric water pump failure are other known issues.
Rivals
The 228i competed with the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA 250, which offered four doors but front-wheel-drive-based platforms.
