ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 228I
The 2015 BMW 228i is a version of the first-generation 2 Series (F22), sold in the US as a two-door coupe and, from 2015, as a convertible; there was no saloon. It uses BMW’s N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 240 hp and 255 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was available at no extra cost.
Second year of the 2 Series
The 2 Series coupe arrived for 2014 to replace the 1 Series coupe. For 2015 the range expanded with the 228i xDrive all-wheel-drive model and the 2 Series Convertible. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds for the automatic 228i, and EPA ratings of 23 mpg city and 35 mpg highway (about 10.2 and 6.7 L/100km) made it one of the most efficient cars in its class.
What it is like
The 228i is a compact, rear-drive coupe with a well-balanced chassis and a strong, flexible engine. Compared with the 1 Series it is longer and wider, with more rear legroom and a bigger boot, though the rear seats remain best for occasional use. The coupe seats four.

Commonly reported N20 issues include timing-chain guide wear, oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets, and electric water pump failures. Regular oil changes help prolong the timing chain.
Rivals
The 228i competed with the Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA 250.
