ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X3 SDRIVE28I

The 2015 BMW X3 sDrive28i is the rear-wheel-drive version of the second-generation X3 (F25), built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 240 hp and 260 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic.

New for 2015

The 2015 model year brought the F25’s mid-life facelift, with headlights that join the kidney grille, reshaped bumpers and an updated interior. It also introduced two new versions in the US: the sDrive28i, the first rear-wheel-drive X3 offered there, and the xDrive28d diesel. The sDrive28i was aimed at buyers in warmer regions who did not need all-wheel drive and preferred a lighter, simpler car.

Practicality

The X3 has five seats, a large boot and rear seats that split and fold, making it an easy family car. The turbo four delivers brisk performance and, with auto start-stop, good economy for its class. Without all-wheel drive it is best suited to paved roads and mild climates.

The N20 engine is known for timing chain guide wear, which can cause a whining noise and, in severe cases, engine damage, so check the history for chain work. Other commonly reported issues include oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover, the electric water pump and the auto start-stop battery.

Rivals

Rivals included the Audi Q5 2.0T, Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 and GLK 250 BlueTEC, Lexus NX 200t, Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
