ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 550I GRAN TURISMO
The 2015 BMW 550i Gran Turismo is the V8 version of the facelifted 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), a five-door hatchback with a tall roofline and long wheelbase. Its revised 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, often referred to as the N63TU, produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft and drives through an eight-speed automatic. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version; xDrive all-wheel drive was also offered.
Post-facelift changes
The GT’s mid-life update arrived for the 2014 model year, making 2015 the second year of the revised car. Changes included new front and rear styling, a reshaped rear end that increased boot space, and LED lighting options. The updated V8 brought a significant jump in output over the 400 hp engine of earlier cars, along with technical revisions intended to address some of the original engine’s problems.
What it is like
Performance is strong, and the eight-speed automatic makes the most of the broad spread of torque. Comfort is the GT’s priority: rear passengers get limousine-like legroom thanks to the 3,070 mm wheelbase, and the raised seats make getting in and out easy. Self-levelling rear air suspension helps keep the ride composed when loaded.
Buying one today
Although the updated V8 is regarded as an improvement, it can still suffer from oil consumption, coolant leaks, timing chain wear and heat-related deterioration of hoses and seals. Check that all recall and service campaign work has been completed, and budget for the running costs of a heavy, complex car.
Rivals
The 550i GT’s rivals in 2015 included the Audi A7, the Mercedes-Benz CLS550, the Porsche Panamera and BMW’s own 650i Gran Coupe.
