ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 550I GRAN TURISMO
The 2013 BMW 550i Gran Turismo is the V8-powered flagship of the original 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), a five-door hatchback with a raised seating position. It uses the 4.4-litre N63 twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. This entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version; xDrive all-wheel drive was also available.
The final pre-facelift year
The 2013 model year was the last for the GT in its original form before a facelift for 2014 brought revised styling, a larger boot and an updated version of the V8 with more power. The 2013 car therefore keeps the first-generation N63, with its turbochargers mounted inside the V of the engine. This “hot-vee” layout helps response but concentrates heat in the engine bay.
What it is like
The 550i GT is quick and refined for such a large car, with strong mid-range torque and a smooth eight-speed gearbox. It rides on a long 3,070 mm wheelbase shared with the 7 Series, giving rear-seat passengers generous space. The dual-mode tailgate, which can open as a small boot lid or a full hatch, adds versatility.
Buying one today
The early N63 V8 has a reputation as one of BMW’s less reliable engines. Widely reported issues include high oil consumption, failing valve stem seals, leaking fuel injectors, timing chain wear, coolant leaks and heat-damaged wiring and hoses. BMW issued a customer care programme for many N63 cars addressing several of these faults. A full history, ideally with records of that work, is essential.
Rivals
Alternatives in 2013 included the Audi A7, the Mercedes-Benz CLS550 and the Porsche Panamera, as well as V8 SUVs such as the BMW X5 xDrive50i.
