ABOUT THE 2014 BMW 550I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2014 BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo is the V8 flagship of the facelifted F07 5 Series GT, a large five-door hatchback with all-wheel drive. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft and drives through an eight-speed automatic.
Facelift and a stronger V8
2014 brought the GT’s mid-life update. The rear end was redesigned with a longer tail that increased boot space by around 60 litres, and the front gained new lights and bumpers. At the same time the 550i moved to the updated version of BMW’s twin-turbo V8, raising output from 400 hp to 445 hp. The six-cylinder 535i GT remained the volume model.
On the road
The V8 gives this heavy car effortless performance, and the long 3,070 mm wheelbase makes for a relaxed, stable ride and very generous rear legroom. It is not a sports car, though: body weight is high and the GT is happiest at a steady motorway pace. EPA ratings of 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway (about 14.7 and 9.8 L/100km) reflect that weight.
Buying one today
BMW’s twin-turbo V8 is the main concern for used buyers: oil consumption, valve stem seals, timing chain wear and heat-related leaks from hoses and turbo lines are all commonly reported, and repairs are costly. Rear air suspension, the transfer case and the many electrical systems should all be checked.
Rivals
Comparable cars included the Audi S7, Porsche Panamera 4S and Mercedes-Benz CLS550 4MATIC.
